Loud clunk when starting engine

May 14, 2010 · You can do a visual inspection of the flex discs and motor mounts to see if they're worn out. cracks in the rubber mean tey're done, put it in park and grab the drive shaft and twist it back and forth while looking at flex discs to see if there's any play. try to turn the driveshaft carefully to see if the companion flange turns alot before the axles move. you may be able to feel the clearance between the pinion and ring gear. pry on the motor and trans w/ large prybar to see if the mounts ... The pins that connect the links of the Silent Chain wear which causes the chain to be longer. When the tensioner can no longer keep the chain tight, the chain slips on the 19T sprocket. This is what is causing the loud popping noise. The factory replacement is 3234057 and is $140-$200 depending on where you get one.

Here's what leads up to the clunk: I put the '05 Rav (2WD 130K) in reverse (no noises there), and give it some gas, about as much as I do when I start off in forward (so a little more than the usual amount since it's in reverse) and I hear a loud clunk that sounds like the transmission is going to fall out of the vehicle or something!

There was one thing I think I forgot to mention that was happening way before rebuild and it is a loud clunk whenever I put selector from P to R or D to R. I consulted this to the technician and he mentioned me that there are 2 shift solenoids that if starting to fail, are responsible for that clunk. He also tells me that these cost new about $400.

I bought a new 2019 SXT two weeks ago. About 50% of the time, it makes a clunk in the engine when starting. While it was in the shop getting stripes installed, I drove another brand new 2019 SXT as a loaner and it made the same clunk about 50% of the time when starting. Incidentally, it does start just fine.When I drive over even small imperfections in the road I can hear a loud clunking noise from the front right wheel area. I pulled the wheel and don't see anything obviously loose. I did however notice that if I'm on the brakes even the slightest bit while going over bumps there is no noise. This... Turns out that the aftermarket intake came loose enough from the throttle body that it would hit against a support bracket on start up. Put a little blue loctite on the bolts and now they should stay in place.
